In New Zealand, Merino sheep are grazed on pasture and kept outside in ‘free range’ conditions throughout the year. Supplementary feed is provided during periods of slower pasture growth, in order to meet both the ‘maintenance’ nutritional requirements of the sheep and also to produce fibre of the highest quality.
